Colostomy Bags, Care and Supply
An ostomy is a medical procedure that involves cutting an opening in the abdominal wall to allow feces or urine come out of the body into a bag—when it cannot come out through the rectum or anus because of:
- Colon cancer
- Rectum cancer
- Wound or trauma to the rectum or colon (such as a gunshot)
- Birth malformations
- Bowel obstruction
- Diverticulosis
- Crohn's disease
- Perineal wounds and fistulas
When the opening comes from the colon (large intestine), the procedure is called a colostomy. In a colostomy an artificial opening is made in the abdomen wall (called stoma) and the colon is connected to the stoma (by stitching it to the skin). The feces leave the body through the stoma and into a bag attached to the abdomen.
When the colostomy is performed on the right side of the large intestine, you must use special ostomy supply - sich as bag or pouch. Colostomy pouching systems are comfortable and easy to use. The colostomy bag attach to the skin securely but are also easy to drain (with a closure at the bottom) and replace. Pouches have multiple layers that contain odors and prevent rustling. Most importantly, they are usually not visible under clothing.
Even after a colostomy, you can exercise and put on your swimwear. Pouching systems have an elastic film that conforms to your body and stretches with your skin. These features let you live your life normally, without worrying about leaks or skin infections. Furthermore, the film is waterproof, allowing you to bathe and swim without removing the pouch.
There is no need to feel uncomfortable about the idea of living with a colostomy. Once you get accustomed to the colostomy bag and its maintenance, you can enjoy all the activities and food you love. In some cases, your underlying condition may heal, and the colostomy can be reversed.
